View RecordsChoose an Alameda court-record request, California personal record review or agency-directed Live Scan for your background-check purpose.
Start with the organization asking for the check: does it need an Alameda criminal-case document, your own California history, or a fingerprint response sent to an authorized employer or licensing agency? Alameda Superior Court supplies case records. California DOJ maintains the statewide fingerprint repository. Neither an individual court file nor the act of being fingerprinted is a universal countywide clearance.
For employment or licensing, obtain the requesting agency’s BCIA 8016 Live Scan form before booking. Its agency identifier, recipient and applicant category determine the authorized check and where the answer goes. Do not replace those instructions with the personal Record Review form just because both services collect fingerprints.
Use the court’s Criminal Record Requests page for the Public Records Web Portal; use its Odyssey route for online case information. Non-confidential documents can also be viewed in person. A portal request needs the defendant’s first and last names plus either the case number, or date of birth and arrest date, or date of birth and conviction date. Specify the judgment, sentencing order or other document needed, and whether it must be certified.
The Criminal Division sends an email acknowledgment, then an itemized bill if it locates the record or a notice that the record is unavailable. A registered account is needed for all features, including web payment. A search result identifies a case; it is not the requested certified document. The page does not promise a fixed document-delivery deadline.
The published CRM 500 form lists copies at $0.50 per page and certification at $40, with possible $10 off-site retrieval, $15 search increments of ten minutes and postage. Request the itemized total for your particular file before paying; the form notes exemptions for certain government agencies. These are court charges, separate from DOJ and fingerprint-collection fees.
Personal Record Review is available to the subject of the history; DOJ will not process third-party requests through this route. California residents submit Live Scan using BCIA 8016RR, marking Record Review for both the application type and reason. The DOJ processing fee is $25, and its instructions link to a possible fee waiver. The operator’s rolling charge is separate.
This personal-review record cannot be used for visa, immigration or other foreign-nation transactions; use DOJ’s separate instructions for those purposes. People living outside California use the manual fingerprint-card application rather than assuming a local Live Scan submission is appropriate. Confirm the required product before spending money on either route.
Use DOJ’s Applicant Background Check Status service with the ATI and your date of birth. An ATI is a transaction reference and does not itself establish that the operator transmitted the prints. For an agency-directed check, results go to the requesting agency; contact that agency about its decision or additional documents it needs.
DOJ describes 48–72-hour automated processing after receipt when no fingerprint match needs review. A match, poor print quality or missing court disposition can require manual work with no fixed completion time. A pending response therefore does not establish that the applicant has a conviction.
After receiving your own Record Review, challenge an inaccurate or incomplete history with BCIA 8706, included when the response contains criminal information. Identify the specific error and attach the history and available supporting proof. Follow the return address on that form.
When the issue is a missing Alameda outcome, request the exact court order and keep it with the disputed history. If the court document itself appears wrong, take the discrepancy to the filing court; a fingerprint operator cannot amend a judicial order. Keep the court case number and ATI separate so each office can identify its own record.
